? The Registrar-General's report for the month of August shows that the total number of deatha in the principal townß of New Zealand was 148, a decrease of 16 on the j number for July. Of the total number of deaths, 58, or 39*19 per cent., were of children tinder 5 yeara of age. The total births amounted to 502 as against 433 in July, being 1 an increase of (39. The smallest proportional death-rato was at Invercargill, where there were only two deaths registered, being at the rate of 044 per thonaand. The heaviest waa at Hokitika, where 7 deaths, being at the rate of 269 per 1000, were recorded. Among the four largest towns Auckland (population 16.C64) carried off the palm for healthfulness, the deaths numbering 13, or at the rate of o'7B per 1000. Christchurch (15,213) with 16 deaths, at the rate of lOs per 1000, came next ; Wellington (20,563) with 22 deaths, at a rate of I*o7, third ; and Punedin (24,372) with 37 deaths, 152 per 1000, comeß last. The births were as follows : — Dunedin, 92 ; Wellington, 73 ; Auckland 68; Christchurch, 47.
