THE WAR IN TUNIS. RUNNING SHORT OF PROVISIONS.

THE WRECK OF THE TEUTON. [.SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE ARGUS.J London, 3rd September. Owing to Bhortneßß of their supply of provisions, the French troops have been compelled to evacuate Hammamet, the seaport to the south-east of Tunis, of which they took possession after their engagement with the Arab forces, in consequence of the menacing attitude of the tribes. Reinforcements, numbering 30,000 troops, have been despatched from France to North Africa. During the recent election of the Chamber of Deputies, Henri Rochefort, Communi-t, having appeared before the electors of Paris at a public gathering, was received very unfavourably, being pushed off the platform and compelled to desist from sneaking. Disturbances have occurred in the City of Aleppo, in North Syria. '1 he anniversary of the fall of Sedan was celebrated at Berlin on Friday, but not with the enthusiasm which had been expected. The missing passengers who escaped by the third boat from the wreck of the Teuton have arrived at Capetown. The latest news regarding the wreck of tho steamer is that the bulk-head compartments gave way on her being backed off the rocks. This opened out passages for the water to run into the engineroom, which was immediately flooded. Tho steamer then went down head first into the deep water. Conservatives have secured the elections for North Lincolnshire and North Durham, two county seats which were won by the Liberals at the general elections in 1880.
