RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT. This Day.

Before Messrs. Edward Shaw, R.M., and Mr. Alexander Le Grand Campbell, J.P.J ATTEMPTED SUICIDE. Robert Bolt appeared in answer to a charge of having, on Sunday morning the 28th ultimo, attempted to kill himnelf by striking himself on the forehead with the sharp edge of an axe. The circumstances of the occurrence have been previously reported. Dr. Keyworth, who had attended the prisoner, stated that the wounds on his forehead were four in number, each about an inch and a half in length. In themselves, the cuts were not of a dangerous nature. In explanation of his conduct, the prisoner said that at the time of the occurrence he thought he was being chased by a lot of people who wished to kill him, and he " thought he would kill himself to save the torture." He added that he had an idea of giving himself up to the police on the previous day, "as he had not done his duty towards his wife and family." Prisoner, who still seemed to be in a dazed condition, presumably from the effects of drink, was committed for trial. JUVENILE FIKE-EAI6EES. John Wilson and Patriok Clarke, two youngsters, were charged with setting fire to a quantity of goree near Aurora-terraoe. Walter Sargent, another boy, denied lighting a fire in the open air off Main-street, Newtown, on Saturday, the 27th ult., but the offenco was proved on the evidence of another small boy named George Emmet, and he was fined ss. THE LICENSING ORDINANCE. Stephen Oliver, licensee of the Metropolitan Hotel, Moleaworth-street, was charged with refusing to supply to William Lyon, without assigning a valid reason 'for the refuss?, a certain meal, viz , a tea. Constable Lyon deposed that on the 3rd inst. he visited the Metropolitan Hotel, and asked to be supplied with tea. The defendant refused to comply with the request on the ground that the hotel was "under repair." The defendant was examined, and said he had been in possession of the hotel for the past two months, during which period he had had no boarders, neither had ho supplied guests with meals. He was unable to do so from the fact that he was having the place " done up." The Bench, nnder the oironmstanceß, decided to inflict the nominal penalty of 20s and costs. A DANGEROUS PBACTICE. Bennet "Wilton, a boy, was fined si, without costs, for leaving a cart unattended in Taranaki Place without passing the chain through the wheel of the vehicle. ALLEGED OBSCENITY. George Gordon was charged with nsing obscene language to Andrew Collins. The complainant did not appear, and the information was accordingly dismissed. QUIN-STBEBT. Several cross-summonses, in which Norah Sotter, Elizabeth Oakes, and Henry Summers appeared as defendants, were dismissed. The particulars of these. case 3 were published a week ago.
