THE MAYORAL ELECTION. fi ENTLEMEN,— I cannot feel otherwise \JT than highly gratified by receiving such an influential requisition as has been placed in my hands, asking me to allow myself to become a candidate for the high position of Mayor of Wellington. I have been assured, by those capable of forming a correct opinion, that my return would be a matter of almost absolute certainty — irrespective of any other known candidate. Under these circumstances it gives me much concern in having to decline the honor you propose to confer npon me. My reasons for declining to accede to your requisition are simply these :— My business arrangements are likely to cause me to visit the Old Country early next year, and I cannot justify myself in allowing you to put me in a position that I would have to resign in a few months. I think my very many friends and supporters will see that my action in this matter is dictated by a desire not to please myself, but to prevent the interests which the Mayor should represent being injnred. I thank you very much for tho confidence reposed in me, and assure you that it will always give me tho greatest pleasure to retain the same. 1 am. Yours most faithfully, J. S. M. THOMPSON.
