DEATH OF DR. TANNER. ELECTRIC EXHIBITION IN PARIS'. GREAT LANDSLIP IN VIRGINIA. A SEAMEN'S STRIKE THREATENED IN LONDON. [SPECIAL TO MELBOURNE AGE. | London, 9th August. Serious anti-Jewish riots have taken place at Jastrow, a town in Western Prussia, where a la^ge proportion of the popu'ation are Jews. In tho disturbance a clergyman named shilling was dangerously maltreated. Order was restored with difficulty. 10 th August. An early prorogation of Parliament is anticipated. The Ministerial Whitobat Dinner has been fixed to take place on Wednesday next, the 17th August. A growing feeling of dissatisfaction with the existing Free Trado policy of England is being manifested, especially in the manufacturing districts. An active agitation has been set on foot, and throughout the country Protectionist literature is boinjf distributed broadcast. A large public meeting has been held in London, at Fxeter Hall, where speeches were delivered protesting against the maintenance of the Free Trade policy established by Cobden, as one now unsuited to the position of Great Britain, in view of the prevalence of Protectionist principles in other countries. The death is announced of Dr. Tanner, the New York physician, who last year fulfilled his self-imposed task of fasting forty days. His medical attendants state there is no doubt that the strain to his system caused by his long abstinence from food hastened his death. 11th August. A highly interesting exhibition has been opened in Paris, under the supervision of some leading French scientists, illustrating the development of electricity in all its modern applications. Some most wonderful inventions are exhibited, tho novelty of which has attracted universal attention. A groat landslip has taken place in Virginia, United States, causing a very considerable destruction of property. Seven negros were killed. Much dissatisfaction exists among the sailors employed at the port of London, who complain of tho low rate of wages and other grievances. A Btrike is threatened unloss their demands are acceded to by the shipmasters. During the past day or two the sailors, in order ta draw public attention to their case, have marched in procession in large numbers through the streets.
