MR. HURSTHOUSE, M.H.R., IN CONTRADICTION.

TO THE EDITOR OF THE EVENING POST. Sir— Your correspondent "Elector," in last night's Post, makes a statement which L hope you will allow me to contradict through your columns. He states that I, in my place in the House, stated " that New Zealand would never progress until the wages of working men were brought dowu to four shillings a day." Ihe sayings of public men are, I take it, the property of tho public, and are open to the criticism of any who consider themselves aggrieved, and I, for one, shall never complain so long as the truth is adhered to, but when men descend to untruths to make their case good, it is my duty to myself to contradict such untruths. The statement made by "Eleotor"is untrue in every sense, as a reference to Hansard will show. What I did say is, I believe, the truth and I am prepared to abide by it. As to my being a member of the ruling family, is a matter and part of a joke which ' Elector " does not uuderßtand, and I will not take up the space in your valuable paper to en'ighten him. Neither does he underderstand my position as whip to my party when he supposes I speak the mind of the Mini-try, but with this I need not trouble you, except that I speak of my own mind without any reference to the party to whioh I belong. I am, &c, HICHARD HURSTHOUSB. 9th August, 1881
