HUTT COUNTY COUNCIL.

? An ordinary meeting of the Hutt County Council was held to-day. Piesent — Councillors Lancaster (Chairman), Mason, M.H.R., Chew, Taylor, Morgan, Dick, Speedy, and Monaghan The Engineer reported that he had seen the paund-keeper at Karori in reference to the complaint made against him by Mr. Heading. His explanation was that when the latter called with the cattle he (the pound-keoper) was dressing, and Reading went away before he could come out. No action was taken in the matter. After hearing the report of the engineer, it was resolved, on the motion of Councillor J. Chew, seconded by C mncillor Tailor, " That the Chairman, Councillor Taylor and tho mover, be appointed to wait upon the Government, to point out that the railway workß have closed the old bridle-track from llr. Izard's property to Kaiwarra, and ask them to remedy the evil." Tae Engineer made a report recommending, iv regard to the Ngahauranga road that, instead of fencing, it would be far better to take off a few sharp corners, and also widen some of the narrow portions, thereby greatly improving tho road. During the recent hoavy rain 3 great damage was done to portions of this road. Tho old wooden retaining wall had in many places given way, rendering the road unsafe. Ho recommended rebuilding in stone. He also recommended the fencing of about 25 chains of the Gorge road, Upper Hut-. It was resolved that the report should be allowed to stand over until next month, to enable the members for the district, in company with the Engineer, to inspect the road. A letter waa read from the Karori-Makara Highway Board, ask Lug the Council to lay off a road through Mr. Ceplas's property, South Makara, as early as possiblo, as the time during which this ponld be done without corapen-ation expired in Decomber. It was stated by the Chairman that the proposed road led to the Torawhiti diggings, and the owner of the land had levied mail on the persons using the present track. On the motion of Councillor Monaghan, it was resolved that the mover and the Chairman wait on the Governmont to urge them to proclaim at once the road referred to. Considerable time was taken up in disoussing a charge made against Moore, tho Porirua roadman, of having been at work on his own ground on days for which ho had charged tae Council for being at work on the road. Moore attended before the Council and denied the truth of the charge, whioh, he said, was brought by Hook and Thompson, the informants, oui of spite. It was resolved that the matter be investigated by the whole Council. A letter was re«d from the Hutt Local Board complaining of the disgraceful condition of the Lower flutt Pound. It was stated that animals were kept without food or shelter, and cattle had been sold without the necessary notice being given. The matter was referred to the councillors for the riding to report upon. Accounts amounting to J8293 8s 2d on the general account, and .£3ll 63 Gd on the separate account were passed for payment.
