A strong westerly ga.e has been blowing here during the day. Tne brigaatiue Borealis and tha schooner Coronet, lying to the westward of the wharf, suffered through bumping, but the other vessels at the wharf, being enabled to 1 c end on, are riding in comparative safety. 'I he schooner .^isay had a narrow escape. Her anchor fouled, and the vessel dragged rapidly until within a few yards of the solid portion of the Railway Wharf,
where she fortunately brought up. A memorial is being prewired by hhipowners, praying the Harbour Board to co.iimici-IT's, so that vessels may beilh cud on at the wharf. Thiq has been douo owing to the manner in which vessels have beon grinding against tho wharf daring gules. iNVEPCARGif.L. Sth Arjgust. Downright wintry weather haa prevailed for the last three days. There has been a succession of cold and high winds from the north and east, bringing with them heavy falls of snow and rain. Uut-door work ia entirely suspended, and many of the lowlying streets are flooded. This evening the ground -s covered with snow, and the glass is at 28*6, with a downward tendency, Hokitika, Bth August. It has been blowing a heavy gale of wind for 48 hours, accompanied with heavy showers and lightning.
