THE ALLEGED EXTEAORDINAR CONDUCT OF A MAGISTRATE. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
Hokitika, Bth August. The District Court to-day was occupied with the trial of W. B. Golland, of Kumara, for indecent assault on a young girl. The jury retired at 5 p.m., and are not likely to agree to-night. At the hearing of the case the witnesses' evidence differed a good deal from that taken before the magistrate at Kumara. Judge Broad said the matter was before him judicially, and he felt bound to say that it was not surprising there were discrepancies, seeing that several witnesses were young girls, whose evidence wa3 takea after midnight. The prisoner might be prejudiced, as the discrepancies would not appear, under the circumstances, of bo much importance, and he must say he regarded the taking of evidence of children at such a time as most improper.
