The request was one made by the warehousemen to p*y full duty in releasing calico, &c, from bond, and ' have a rebate allowed if the Government proposals as to the remission of duty became ■ law The conference between the Chamber of Commerce, the Harbour Board, the City Council and the Port Chilmers Town Coun- \ cil affirmed the desirableness of erecting a 1 new graving dock 500 feet long, at a oost ' not exceeding J2100.000 ; also passed a resolution that a bill t hould be introduced into Parliament for vesting the existing dock and port harbor reierves in a trust, with the object of facilitating the construction of the proposed dock. The chairmen of the Harbour Board and Chamber of Commerce, and the Mayors of Dnnedin and Port Chalmera, were appointed a deputation to proceed to Wellington on Monday to co-operate with Mr. Macandrew in this matter. The revenue of ths Lyttelton Harbour Board for the past month was nearly JJ3OOO. Ninety-two vessels arrived at and left the port during July, representing 23,807 tons. The Board being dissatisfied with the high price chargod for gaa at Lyttelt">n, has instructed the Engineer to seek information as to the possibility of a more economical means of lighting the harbonr, hinting at the advisibility of introducing the electric light. This Day. At the inquest this morning on Jeffery Wiiliam3, who hung himself in a, blacksmith's shop in Victoria-street yesterday, the jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity. The day has been observed here a3 a holiday, on account of the Hnnt Club Steeplechases. The business places and most of the shop 3 aro closed. Intercaegill, This Dat. A young man named fccott, agad 22, employed on the Invercargill- Kiverton Railway, while out shooting a few d*ys ago had his thumb blown off, the contents of the charge and part of the thumb bone lodging in bis
shoulder. He lingered till yo3terday when he died, mortification having set in. Gisbornb, This Dat.S A company, with 50 £2 pharos, has been formed for the purpose of exploring for minerals. Mr. Allen will go out to-day. 1 ho natives have allowed prospecting to bo carried on on their land, under certain conditions.
