THE SLIPS ON THE RAILWAY.
? . The slips on the Rimutaka Incline prove to be of a more serious nature than was gathered from the information available yesterday. It seems that, in addition to tho Blip itself, which came down from the hills above, the line itself was cut away for a length of some 50 yards and to a depth of about 30 feet owing to the fallen ddbria damming up a stream. The latter, already swollen by the rain, rapidly rose, and soon effecting a break in the railway embankment, poured thronjh in an irresistible torrent, sweeping all before it, and leaving a wiJo chasm in the line. The situation of the break is about half way down the Incline, just beyond the second small tunnel. It ia expected that it will take a week to repair the damage.althongh Mr. Afhcroft and a strong body of men are ÜBing every possible effort to get tho line in working order. Meanwhile passengers will have to change trains at the break.
