RIFLE SHOOTING.
The second competition for the Chief Justice's cup came off on Saturday last, at the Polhill Gully range, when there were 26 competitors. The conditions for this prize are that it is to be fired for three times, the highest aggregate in the three matches to be the winner. The first of these competitions came off on the 24th May last, when there were 53 entries. Upon that occasion Seaman Dixon made the highest score- 61 points ; Sub-Lieut. Ballinger made 56 points; Lieut. Tait, 54 ; and Lieut. Gell, 50 points. The result of Saturday's match was that
Dixon retained the lead, and Tait the second place, the distance between them being diminished by two points, while Gell and Ballinger tie for third place. It is only fair to add that the other competitors had to fire against disadvantage", through the rain and bad light. We might also mention, for the benefit of those competitors who left the range early, that a mistake occurred at No. 2 target in the marking. It was discovered that the marker had used the magpie di?c for the inner and the inner for the magpie, co the committee decided to alter the shots on the score-sheet accordingly. Below we give the ten highest individual scores made in Saturday's shooting : — 300 400 500 Tl. Lieut. Gell, E 23 32 26 81 Lieut. Tait, E 18 32 29 79 Seaman A.
