CITY COUNCIL.

An ordinary meeting of tho Wellington City Council was held last night. Present— His Worship the Mayor "(in the chair), Councillors Danks, Allen, Stafford, Logan, Maginnity, Thompson, Brown, Young, Greenfield, and Miller. It was resolved that tho Waiwetu Road, stated to have been damaged by the carting of water-pipes, should be put in repair. The tender of Mr. W. F. Oakes, for the formation of track and laying of watermains at Waiwetu, was accepted. The Mayor reported that a letter had been sent to the Colonial Secretary, asking for specific instructions with reference to the removal of patients to the new Hospital, but no answer had been received. The report of the Public Works Committee (which has already been published) was next considered. The City Engineer reported that the laying out of tho Basin Reserve as a pleasure park would cost ,£450, and entail an annual expenditure of .£2OO. After some discussion, Councillor Greenfield withdrew his motion to the effect that the reserve be so laid out, and the clause in tho Public Works report was struck out. Another clause in the report to the effect that Arthur-street be not Jierbed and channelled was struck out, andTt was resolved that the street be kerbed. The rest of the report was adopted. Accounts, amounting to .£1315 193 on the Public Works account and .£1369 53 5d on the general account, were passed for payment. Councillor Logan finally withdrew for the present his resolutions re tho Te Aro Reclamation, which were upon the order paper. Councillor Allen moved, " That a sum not exceeding .£l5O be appropriated towards the expense of giving effect to the resolution of 19fch May, 1831, relative to the hringing into force of the Contagious DiFo- ses Act, 1869." This was seconded by Councillor Young. The Mayob said he had ifc on the authority of the Government officer tbat the cost would be .£450 instead of .£l5O. Eventually, after some discussion, the resolution was negatived by 7 to 4. Ayes—Councillors Allen, Young, Logan, and Danks. Noes—The Mayor, Councillors Miller, Greenfield, Thomson, Brown, Maginnity, and Stafford. The Council then adjourned.
