Wilson, Hobson- street; or to W. T. Charlewood, Box 58a, Post Office. TO THE BURGESS ES OF THORNDON. LADIES & GENTLEMEN,— With very great regret I am constrained to announce my withdrawal from the election contest for Thorndon Ward, owing to the desertion, at tho eleventh hour, of certain persons who had undertaken to manage the affairs of my election on the election day. I am utterly at a loss to account for th>'s sudden falling away of my friends. I myself had the opportunity of accepting or rejecting what bouie peoplo would consider a very " favorable " offer made to mo by Dr. Newman himself, on condition that 1 ehould withdraw from the contest —an offer which was mado on tho "honor" of a gentleman, and on tho further condition that it should never bo mentioned beyond the walls of the room in which we sat, Buch was its peculiar nature— but I cannot in any way account for this marvellous cessation of zeal on the part of my warmest supporters, and within one day, too, of the polling 1 don't think it is going too far to say that this treatment is ungenerous. It is a manner of doing thing 3 which is so foreign to my nature, and so utterly opposed to what is duo to the ratepayers as a simple matter of honesty, that I have determined to wash mv hands of a contest with which there is mixed up so much that is unworthy and unmanly. I must except from these remarks Mr._ J. A. N. Salmon (who has worked loyally with me in all my contests), Mr. T. Hodgins. and several other gentlemen whoso names I would gladly mention if I had permission to do so. I offer my warm thanks to all those ladies and gentlemen who kindly promised to vote for me. I remain, Your obedient servant, GEO. FISHER. PKR. NEWMAN hopes that tho RATEPAYERS OF THORNDON who havo PROMISMD HIM THEIR SUPPORT, WILL VOTE EAIiLY TO-MORROW.
