PUBLIC WORKS COMMITTEE.

+ The following is the report of the Public Works Committee to be submitted to the City Council on Thursday evening: — The Committee beg to report (I) that the City Surveyor has arranged for the maintenance of the Wainui Road to the satisfaction of the County Engineer and|Wardens. (2) That they have reconsidered tho matter of the night-soil contract, and recommend that another fortnight's grace be given to the contractors. (3) 'I hat the City Surveyor reports that the only means of removing the storm water from Lambton Quay is by means of a brick sewer through the reclaimod laud at an estimated cost of £290. The committee recommend that this work be proceeded with at once, and that Government be called on to defray the expense thereof, 'lhe committee recommend — (1) That tenders be called for the maintenance of the road to Ohiro through the Town Belt reserve. (2) That the arrangement with the Wellington Gas Company for taking over the land required for the extension of Tory-street be given effect to forthwith. (3) That the kerbing and channelling of Arthur-street be not proceeded with at present. (4) lhat f onoing notices be served on Messrs. J.Nathan and Co. for land in College and Tory streets, and on Mr. John Murray for hnd at corner of Sydney and Parliament streets, and on Mr. W. Fitzgerald for land at Clyde Quay. (5) That the pavement of Mulgrave and Sydney streets, as per loan schedule, be proceeded with at once. (6) That the salary of R. Mowatt, assistant wharf clerk, be raised to .£l5O per annum from Ist January, 1881. (6) That accounts amounting to .£1345 19s ba passed for payment.
