It was raining at about 8 p.m., when a sudden chill took place, and a hailstorm followed, lasting for some time. About half-past 8 it began to snow heavily in la^ge flakes, and continued till about 11.30 p.m., when about threo inches of snow covered the roofs of houses and other exposed places. A frost set in about 1 a.m , and at dawn the snow which had fallen was frozen hard. Tho whole country was white, tho flats and forest trees being covered, while all tho puddlos in tho streets wore frozon. Ice and snow are still lying in shady places. An accident occurred at a quarry yesterday to a large steam derrick. Ono of th 9 wheels was stripped of the cogs, which flew in every direction, the driver escaping by a miracle. There was also another accident while drying some nitro-glycerino, which exploded, but without doing any damage. Christchurch, This Da r. A heavy gale from the south-west whs experienced on Saturday night, accompanied by hail and snow. No damage is recorded. Otakt, This Day. An old lady, named Mrs. Dodds, died here yesterday, at tho age of ninety-six. Dunedin, This Day. The Otago Rugby Union decline to participate in tho proposed football tour through Australia. The committee of the Dunedin Jockey Club have offered tho Forbury Park Company .£25.000 for tho race-course, bnt no definite agreement has yet been come to, aB the company are asking iJ30,000. The Jockey Club agreed to lot the offer stand over for six montliß, pending the company accepting it.
