WOOLLEN CLOTH FACTORY FOR WELLINGTON.

TO THE EDITOB OF THE BVENINO POST. Sir, — Mr. Hay's letter in your paper of the 6th instant is a stop in the right direction. Should any of your readers wish for further proof of the desirability of having a factory here, a visit to the village of Kaiapoi would convince them. When wo bear in mind that nearly one-half tho population of ' New Zealand aro living in towns, and to a large extent not engaged in any productive ] work, it is time efforts were being made to afford employment for the rising generation. I srive a list of wages earned weekly at the ' Kaiapoi factory : — Wool eoourers, 455 ; laborers for ditto, 40s ; dyer, 60s ; laborer for ditto, 425 ; fireman, 50a ; engineer, 70s ; loom tenders, 455 ; girls for warping, from 8s to 1 5s ; milling, 435 ; finishing, 48s ; assis- ' tants to ditto, 30s; boys, 15s; packing, 70s; ' ditto assistants, 83s ; carding overlookers, ] 80s ; ditto assistants, 603 ; fettling, 40s ; - g'rls, 10b to 14s ; spinners, 35s to 45s ; boyß, < 12s to 15a ; weavors, 18s to 325 ; knotters, 1 12s to 178 6d ; and carpenters, 10s for eight hours. Mr. Hay's suggestion of .£5 shares l is a good ono, as it affords evoryone a ohance of being a shareholder, and consequently a consumer of his own manufactures. Having been all my life-time in the manufacturing lino, I know from exporienoe that it only wants a start to bring it to a successful issue. — I am, &c, Wk. Aldeudick. 1 Panama Chambers, Bth June.
