The committee of the Wellington Rifle Association met last night, when the fol owing members were named aa prize-takers in the Consolation Match : — Corporal Holmes, Lieutenant Gell, Gunner M'Kenzie, R. Whiteman, Gunner Turner, F. Whiteman, Seaman Armstrong, P.O. France, J. Whiteman, Volunteer Lewer. The prizes won at the recent meeting will be given to-morrow night, at the Volunteer Drill Shed, to those who have won them. There was a large attendance at the Exhibition last night. The promenade concert was a great attraction, a number of solos, duets, &0., being given in a pleasing manner. The principal extra attraction to-night will i be communication by telephone between the Athenaeum Buildings and Wanganui. The total takings up to last night amounted to about .£260. Two girla, the daughters of Mr. Timmonds, dairyman, of Evans Bay, met with a rather serious accident yesterday, about noon. They were driving home from town in their father's milk-cart, when the horse fell nearly opposite the Kilbirnie Hotel, and broke one of the shafts. Tbe mishap had the effect of frightening the horse, which ran the vehicle into an adjoining fence on Mr. Burkes property. Both of the occupants were thrown out, and the wheels of the cart passed over their bodies. The younger girl had two of her ribs broken, and received Some severe internal injuries, but her sister, Miss Henrietta Timmonds, escaped with less serious injury. Dr. Collins is now attending the unfortunate girls. The officers of the Wellington Naval Brigade, feeling their efforts cramped by lack of proper equipment for the corps, have manfully put their shoulders to the wheel to raise funds for the purchase of a brig and necessary boats. Subscription lists have been started, and the first and second lieutenants, who are taking charge of them, have already succeeded in raising upwards of iB2O0 — a circumstance which shows that the efforts on behalf of the corps have met with genuine sympathy at the hands of a considerable section of the public. Many of the subscribers have given sums varyinar from £5 to i>2s each. There are three screens on exhibition at the Athenaeum Buildings which have attracted a considerable amount of attention. Two of these have been made by Mrs. Stilling, of the Hutt, and the work occupied her, we believe, two years The screens are made of pictures artistically pasted on canvass, and the effect is very pretty. Mr. Thomas Beadnall is the maker of the third screen, and it is in appearance and style very similar to those of Mrs. Stilling. Among the specimens of penwork and engrossing are three illuminated addresses, the work of Mr. Dennis Cochrane, of Clyde Quay. The illuminating is very creditable to the artist.
