DESTRUCTIVE FIRE AT TIMARU. [UNITED PRESS ASSOCIATION .] Timaru, 22nd May.
A most destructive fire occurred here last night, by which Bruce' a Waitangi flour mills were almost totally destroyed. The fire was first noticed on the top of the fourth 6to>y, and in half an hour the whole mill was in flames. The building was erected about three years ago at a cost (including machinery) of £12,000. With the stock of wheat, flenr, &c, iuside, the loss is estimated at from £16,000 to £17,000. The insurances, so far as ia at present known, only amount to JE7OOO, divided as lol'.ows :— New Zealand £3000; Union, £2000; Liverpool and Lancashire, £1000; and South British, £1000. Fortunately the night was beautifully calm, otherwise the extensive sawmills adjacent would have been destroyed. The boilers and cylinders alone were saved. There is not the slightest clue to the origin of the fire.
