THE WAR IN TUNIS. RESISTANCE TO THE FRENCH TROOPS. GARIBALDI ON THE SITUATION. SECOND BEADING OF THE IRISH LAND BILL. LORD SALISBURY AND THE IRISH POLICT OF THE GOVERNMENT. Paris, 20th May. Tie motion of Mr. Baxdoux for the abolition of scrutin d'arrondessernent, and the substitution of scrutin de liste in its place, was, after much discussion, adopted by the Chamber of Deputies yesterday. Telegrams have been received by the Government from the headquarters of the French army in Tunis to the effect that the advance of the troops has been vigorously opposed by native Arab tribeß, and that severe fighting has taken place. Bomb, 20th May. Garibaldi, the Italian patriot, has written a letter to the Press with referenoe to the treaty recently signed by the Bey of Tunis and the commander of the French forces in that country, in which he declares that the annexation of Tunis by France would be an insult to Italy, and that the French policy in that respect is threatening to Italian interests. London, 20th May. In the House of Commons yesterday the Irish Land Bill was read a second time on a division by a majority of 176. Mr. Parnell and the members of the extreme Iri«h party abstained from voting. At a banquet in the City yesterday evening the Marquis of Salisbury made a speech, in the course of which he referred to the Iriih Land Bill in disparaging terms, severely denouncing tha Irish policy of the Government.
