THE INSPECTOR OF LUNATIC ASYLUMS.
? At a meeting of the Cabinet held yesterday the case of the Inspector of Lunatio Asylums unTlofwent {fie mOsFtaf'efuiifctaiiluUratimpef Ministers. The report of the Soyal "Commission, the reply of Dr. Skae to* tnat report, and the evidence given by him before the Commission, were duly considered7*Snd a decision was ultimately arrived at to,giye Dr. Skae bix months' notice of %he termination of his engagement, as required by the terms of his agreement with the Government. The decision of the Government 'in. this matter will command general approval. Nobody questions the ability and experience of Dr. Skae, but his own admissions prove that he lacks the moral courage and strength of will, which are needed to qualify him far exercising the necessary control over the officers of his department, and his retention in office under such circumstances would have been a grave error of judgment. While we recognise the valuable services he has rendered in the past, by improving the condition of our asylums generally, we cannot but feel that Ministers have taken the only course which, under the circumstances, they could properly adopt, and we have no doubt that their action in this respect will meet with public approval.
