THE "THORNDON DOVE-COTE."

Jessie Thompson, Mary Aehton, Alice Blake, Fanny Preston, Harriet Sutoliffe, and Sophia Robinson were charged on remand at the B.M. Court to-day with having no lawful visible moans of support. With the exception of Fanny Preston, who was stated to be too drank to appear in Court, the defendants duly snrrended to their bail for the sentence of the Court. Sergt. Anderson reported that since the defendants were before the Court a week ago four of them — viz., Robinson, Aston, Sutcliffe, and Thompson, had oleared out of the house about which so many complaints had been made; but Blake and Preston still refused to leave the place. Blake disputed this statement. She said Bhe quitted the house at eight o'clock last night, having now taken up her abode at Newtown. The evidence of Constable Gleeson, however, conclusively proved her assertion, to be false, as she was Been there in the company of a man said to be a clerk employed at the Government buildings between nine and ten o'look last night. Sergeant Anderson also stated that although Sntoliffe had left that part of the town— Thorndon— Bhe was concerned in a disturbance that ocourred there before her departure. Ab for Preston, there was at present a charge against her of having used obscene language on the 12th inst. Mr. Shaw, R.M , decided to discharge Aston, Robinson, and Thompson, who had adopted the suggestion which fell from the Bench last week, and in doing bo said that he hoped thej* would now thoroughly recognise the fact that their conduct was open to public review. These defendants must not oonolude from their lenient treatment that they were at liberty to transgress again with impunity. Two of the remaining defendants — Blake and Sutcliffe-^-were farther remanded for sentence till 10 a.m. to-morrow, and the police were instructed to arrest Preston and bring her before the Resident Magistrate at the same time. - -
