The President of the Chamber of Commerce to-day alluded to the fact that while the Melbourne newspapers are pleased to be able to state ihat in one week 53,336 sacks of grain had been conveyed into Melbourne by the Victorian Railway Department, the average number of sacks of grain arriving by rail at Lyttelton for the eight weeks ending 3th April, amounted to 73,715 and during the week ending 12th March, the number was 72,290. Ex-District Judge Weston has received a requisition asking him to stand for the seat for the Grey Valley, vacated by Mr. Masters, but as he is on no electoral roll he is obliged to decline. A master in want of bricklayers has advertised here for a week without getting them. There appears to be a dearth of such workmen, as other employers have been complaining also of their inability to get them. Three insolvencies were filed this week, the principal one being John Morrison Innes, of Mosgiel, storekeeper, with debts £1935, and assets £1399. Oamabu, 12th May. Two stacks have been burnt on Mr. Te3chemaker's Taupo Hill estate, and a3 a considerable distance separated the two stacks the fire is put down to incendiarism. A coroner's enquiry into the circumstances attending the destruction by fire of a stack of grain on the farm of one M'Dowell was held to-day. The grain was insured for £190, and it was stated to be the product of 130 acres. M'Dowell told a witness that 700 bags had been burnt, also a threshing mill, the proprietor of which gave evidence to the effect that he had threshed M'Dowell' s crop of oats, amounting to 163 bags, exclusive of a portion out into chaff, which he stated was carried away to M'Dowell's homestead. The verdict was to the effect that the stack was designedly set fire to, but that there was not sufficient evidence to show by whom. Ofunake This Dat. The Taranaki Education Board has not yet provided Opunake with a school, although at present fifty children are fit to attend, and very shortly there will be one hundred. At the Magistrate's Court this morning, Michael Quirk was charged with having attempted to commit suicide in the Park, by stabbing himself The man was only discharged from the hospital this morning, and w*s immediately arrested by Detective Kirby. Prisoner was committed-for trial, but was liberated on hia own recognisance of £50.
