THE CORPORATION ACCOUNTS.

? The accounts of the Wellington Corporation for the past half-year, and also those for the year, ended 31st March, 1881; have just been published. Dealing with the halfyearly general accounts first, we note that, under the head "revenue," rate receipts have amounted to .65675 12s 3d, of which .£llO 16s represented collections of arrears ; the rents amounted to .£1930; licenses, .£758; wharf, .£7614; and subsidy, .£4029 ; which with a few " unconsidered trifles" bring up the revenue proper for the half-year to a little over .€20,000, or including repayments of expenditure, refunds on account of Hospital and charitable aid expenditure, contractors' deposits, Ac, to £'22,966 4s Bd. The expenditure for the half-year has been .£18,381 12s Id, so that the accounts show a balance of about £3500 to the good on the transactions of the halfyear. The annual accounts show that on the general account the rates collected have amounted to J610.056 14s sd, including .£6lO arrears from last year. The Government subsidy was J84029 ; rents, J63717; licenses, .£3713; building: regulation fees, .£101; wharf receipts, .£13,821 ; weighbridge, .6254; fines, R.M. Conrt, .6116; the repayment of expenditure on footpaths, Ac, have amounted to £314; Hospital and charitable aid account, £3600; Fire Brigade account, £18 ; and contractors' deposits, £1250, the total receipts on the general account having been £41,025. The expenditure was £38,658, and the principal items were (in round numbers) — Lighting, cleaning, and repairing streets, £5300; material, &c, £2500; wages, salaries, and incidental expenditure, £6000; interest, £5000 ; legal expenses, £450 ; hospital, £5000; charitable aid, £959; wharf labor, £7860; expenditure on city reserves, £2674 ; fire prevention, £1460. The year was commenced with a balance to the bad of £30,631, and at the end of the year the balance is £28,364, or. £2267 less. The waterworks account shows an expenditure of £11,300, the balance in hand being £5307, or £700 more than that at the end of last year. Of tho Wainui loan, nearly £70,000 has been expended, and there remains in hand £65,000. Of tho money expended, £51,853 has gone to Laidlaw and Sons for pipes, and £7,819 for interest. On drainage there has been an expenditure of about £10,000, and the balance in hand is £28,614. Of the City Improvement Loan, there has been £19,323 spent, and the remaining balance is £53,566. The City Improvement Loan interest account shows a I balance on the wrong Bide of £3,120, and the wharf tolls account £1,595. The liabilities of the city are set down at £465,976, made up as follows: — Loans, £430,000; interest, £4,150 ; contracts, £29,415 ; sundry accounts and contractors' deposits, £2,372. The assets are set down at £784,090 12s 3d, or £318,000 in excess of the liabilities. Among the assets are set down general rates in arrear, £3,245; water rates in arrear, £2,339 ; special, £697 ; rents in arrear, £913; outstanding debts at the wharf, £2,750; cash on deposit or in current accounts, £127,000: plant, implements, and material, £90,000; town belt reserve, £100,000; reclaimed land, £125,000; Ue Aro foreshore, £150,000; wharf, Ac, £64,000; waterworks, land, dam, &c, £80,000; Municipal offices and site, £14,0J0.
