THE RAID ON WOMEN OF ILL-FAME.

? Sophia Robinson, Mary Ashton, Jessie Thompson, Alice Blake, Harriet Sutcliffe, and Fanny Preston, women of the town, appeared on remand before Mr. E. Shaw, R.iYI., and the Hon. J. Martin, J.P., at the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, charged with having no lawful visible means of support, Sergeant Anderson reported that the defendants, who a fortnight ago entered into their recognizances of £50 each, to appear before tho Bench to-day for sentence, still occupied the same spot, where they continued to pnraue their avocation. Mr. Shaw said he had adjourned these informations in the hope that by this tiruo an alteration would have been effected in the state of things which then existed. It seemed the defendants still constituted a- kind of rookery of prostitution in a particular portion of the town, where the nuisance had attained such proportions as to offend publio decency. It was possible, however, that they had not quite apprehended the reason why the cases were postponed, viz., that they might have an opportunity of clearing -out of their present abode and carrying on their bnsiness in a quieter and more orderly manner. Tho Bench therefore further remanded the cases for another week to give the defendants one more opportunity of doing this. In case they failed to do so, they would most probably bo each sentenced to a month's hard labor. ____________________
