LEADERSHIP OP THE CONSERVATIVE PARTY. INDISPOSITION OF MR. GLADSTONE. THE FRENCH INTENTIONS TOWARDS TUNIS. OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY THE FOREIGN MINISTER. THE BOARD OF TRADE RETURNS. London, 7th May. It is officially announced that the Earl of Dufferin, at present British Ambassador at St. Petersburg, will succeed the Right Hon. G. J. Gosohen as Ambassador at Constantinople, after the Turco-Greek difficulty has received a final settlement. The Right Hon. Sir Edward Thornton, at present British Minister to the United States, will succeed Lord Dufferin at the Russian Court. The Marquis of Salisbury has assumed the leadership of the Conservative party in the House of Lords. The Right Hon. W. E. Gladstone is at present indisposed, but his illness is not of a nature to cause alarm. Paris, 7th May. M. Barthelemy St. Hilaire, Minister for Foreign Affairs, made a statement to-day regarding the intentions of the Government towards Tunis. He announced that after the Tunisian tribe of Kroumirs had been punished by the French troops, the expedition would terminate, and diplomatic negotiations with the Bey would follow. London, 6th May. Consolß have advanced to 102f . The market rate of discount has been reduced to 2 per cent. The bank rate remains at 2£. Adelaide flour, ex warehouse, is unchanged at 435. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,070,000 quarters. Australian best beef tallow has advanced to 34s 6d ; best mutton remains at 365. The Board of Trade returns for last month Bhow the imports to have amounted to .£35,250,000, being a decrease of .£5,375,000 compared with the month of April, 1880. The exports amounted to or a decrease of .£500,000 compared with last year.
