WEIGHTS AND MEASURES.
TO THE EDITOR. OF THB EVENING POST. Sir — Some considerable time since, I read in your columns an announcement to the effect that a constable had been appointed Inspector of Weights and Measures, and I was very glad of it, for if ever an unfortunate city was in need of such an individual it is Wellington. One day last week I bought 41ba of apples from a hawker. Out of curiosity I weighed them, and found exactly 2£lbs. The next time the hawker came round I challenged him with giving short weight, when he coolly replied, "Oh yes, ma'am, we could not afford to give full weight at the price." Since then I have mode many enquiries as to who is the inspector of weights, and if Buch a person exists, but without any satisfactory results. Will you therefore kindly advise me what to do under the circumstances. I am, Housekeeper. Wellington, 6th May, 1881.
