RESIDENT MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
This Dat. [Before Mr. Edward Shaw, E.M.J A BIVT Or TIPPLIRS. Eobert Harcourfc, who failed to appear, was fined 10a for drunkenness. J. Q'ttorke, a Bailor, belonging to the Bhip Pareora, who was brought up for drunkenness on Saturday and discharged with a cantion, was found drunk again a few houra afterwards, and this time had to pay 20s. James Michell, another sailor from the Poreora, and John Gustof, seaman, of the Himalaya, were also charged with, drunkenness, and, on the understanding they would instantly return to the shit), were discharged. J. McFagden, for a similar offence, had to pay sa. THEFT OF A WATCH AHD CHAIN. Walter Dickens, a young man, stood charged with having stolen a silver watch, and chain, value £6, belonging to Robert Looney, and pleaded not guilty. It was stated that on Sunday, the 24th April, the complainant, who lives at the Welcome Restaurant, Willis-stroet. left his watch and chain in the pcckot of his waistcoat, which was hanging up in his bedroom. On the following Monday, on searching his waistcoat pocket for a watch key, he discovered that the
watch and chain had been stolen. The prisoner occupied an adjoining bedroom on Monday evening. The property was traced to the shbjpof Mr. Jacob Frankel, general dealer, I ambton Quay, to whom it had been sold by the prisoner for 35s Mr. Frankel said the prisoner told him the watch and chain were his own property ; he gave him 158 for them. His Worship — What would they be worth new ? Mr. Frankel — I don't know. The prisoner was committed for trial. FROM WANGANUI. Denis Crowley, a pitiable-looking object, recently arrived from Wanganui, was brought up on a charge of vagrancy, having been found wandering about the streets. He was remanded tul Thursday. LARCENY. Benjamin Henry Krocklin, laborer, pleaded guilty to three charges of petty larceny— (l) to having stolen two pairs of boots, value 12s, the property of Messrs. Robert Hannah and Co. ; (2) having stolen an overcoat, value 50b, belonging to Mr. Alexander Sample; and (3) having stolen 12 yards of flannel, value 12a, the property of Mr. Robert Donnelly. He was sentenced to three months' hard labor on eaoh charge, tho sentences to be cumulative. "on the beer." Richard alias William Aldridge pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen an oilskin coat, value 255, belonging to Mr. Andrew Duncan, and said he was "on the beer " when he committed the theft. There were two other charges against him— (l) of stealing a box of tea, the property of Andernon and James ; and (2) of stealing a coat, counterpane, and blanket from the White Swan Hotel. There were several previous convictions againsb the prisoner, who was sentenced to eighteen months' hard labor altogether. CIVIL CABES. Judgment summons— Stewart and Co. v W. F. Oakes, £30 : to pay in fortnightly instalmeuts of £7 10s. In the following oases judgment was given r or the plaintiffs with costs:— J. lieid v. S. Jackson, £5 15s ; J. Reid v. R. J. Williams, £6 ; J. Rountree v. Tyson, £2 13s 3d.
