THE TELEGEAPH RETURNS.
■♦ During the quarter ended 31st March, 1881, 340,521 telegrams were forwarded from offices iifcNew Zealand, the value being .£17,792. This represents a decrease of 2311 in number, and .£5OB in value, as^Wmpared with the March quarter of 1880, sdfar as the general telegraph results are concerned. The falling off, however, is really proportionately greater than would^ap*pear from these figures, because the Government telegrams despatched exhibited an increase of 5619 in the value represented as dompared with the March quarter of 1880. It does not clearly appear why there should have been this increase in the amount of free telegraphing on the part of officials. The revenue results of the department for the financial year are not published with the quarter's returns, as in the case of the other departments whose reports appear in last night's Gazette, but we understand that the total revenue falls short of the estimate by about J2BOOO. Regarding the expenditure no information is as yet available.
