TE ARO RECLAMATION SCHEME.
In accordance with an advertisement which appeared in tho Evening Post yesterday, convoning a mooting of thoso ratepayers who are favorable to tho proposed reclamation of tho To Aro foroshoro, about 30 persons assembled n,t the Mannersstreet Fire Erigado Hall last night for the purpose of discussing tho subjoct, with a view of submitting a series of resolutions at a public meeting of ratepayers, to be held shortly. Mr. M. Quia presided, and, after a few explanatory remarks, alludod to tho sum of .£25,000 which was likely to oomo into the hands of the City Conncil on account of the sale of the Queen's Wharf to the Harbor Board. A better way of laying out this money than in tho work of reclaiming the Te Aro foreshore Mr. Quin thought there could not be. (Hoar, hear.) He oelieved, in fact, that it would bring in £ 100,000 at least. The work would provide employment for many men, and would be the best job tho Council ever took in hand. It would bo ten times more valuablo than the Thorndon reclamation, and would bgII as quickly again. To Aro had always boon the business end of the town as long as ho (Mr Quin) had been resident in Wellington; the Thorndon end was for a few civil Bervice men and hangers on of the Government, who were sucking our life's blood away. (Hear, hear.) The meeting then proceeded to discuss at considerable* length several propositions read by Mr. T. M'Kenzio, of which tho following were eventually adopted:— (l) That it is highly desirable to provide profitable employment for the superabundant labour in the city of Wellington ; (2) that a petition be presented to the Mayor and Councillors of the city of Wellington, praying that tho amount o£ to be received from the Harbor Board be appropriated for the reclamation of the Te Aro foreshore, and that they be requested to petition Parliament at its next sitting, asking that tho J325,000 due by the Harbor Board to the Corporation of Wellington bo bo appropriated ; (3) that a committee- consisting of tho following persons, with power to add to their number, be appointed to carry out the foregoing resolutions, viz., Messrs. M. Quin, T. M'Kenzie, H. Hutchins, T. Dwan, J. Potford, sen., J. M'Lean, Eobinson, Billman, Kyera, F. C. Worth, and H. M'Kenzie; and (4) that a public mooting of ratepayers be called to consider the matter.
