Melbourne, 15th March. Mr. Langridge has declined to allow the P. and O. mails to leave Melbourne) on Monday b on account of Sunday labor being involved, but has telegraphed to London offering to allow their departure on Tuesdays. Arrangements are in progress for the official declaration of the awards to bo made with considerable ceromony on the 22nd inst. Tte charities propose asking exhibitors to hand over the unsold goods for a bazaar at the close of the Exhibition. A doll show held at the Town Hall has been very successful. Seven thousand persons visited it on Saturday. A tragical occurrence took place on Sanday, when a German, named Sohafer, fired a pistol and inflicted three wounds on a young ■wbman named Priscilla Hellier, for Wh6m he entertained a passion. Hellior was sitting with a young man named Jas. Saberg, and while the latter went for' the police, Schafer wounded the girl, then put the pistol to his ear, and blew out his own brains. tThe girl is expected to recover. With a view to purifying the water snpply, on which Melbourrio is dependent, experiments are now being made under the direction of the Government analytical chemist. Stdnit. 15th March. The latest news from Wiloannia, states that a thousand people are now on the diggings. Cargoes of potatoes are eagerly bought at a shilling a pound. "Water is scarce. The Chinamen are still kept off. Th« coaches are overcrowded, and the horses overworked. Stores are now avriving, but prices are high. A permanent payable goldfield is anticipated, out the present returns are not extraordinary. The latest news from Wilcannia states that mining is bubpended through the scarcity of water. Hundreds are on the road to the place despite the warning given. There are no present signs of rain. It is stated that the authorities of Fiji have made representations to the Imperiar Government regarding the maljft'ftCtice&'of Queensland vessels in Polynesia/ Adelaide, 15th March. :" Humors are current at Poet Adelaide to the effect that the Ridgepark was lost through aa error in the compasses, caused by their being adjusted whilst the tug North Arm was alongside.
