100 LIVES LOST. THE ALARMING STATE OP lEELAND. THE JUDGES ON UNDETECTED CRIMES. NEWS FROM THE TRANSVAAL. London, Bth Maroh. Very severe hurricanes, accompanied by heavy falls of snow, have been experienced over the greater part of Scotland during the past 24 hoars, and great damage has been done to property. Terrific gales have raged on the coast, and numerous shipwrecks, resulting in great loss of life, have been caused. So far as can be at present ascercertained fully one hundred persons are known to have been drowned in the vessels which have foundered at ports and off the coast. The Irish Judges of AB9izein their charges to grand juries at the Courts which opened yesterday in the Irish provinces, again took occasion to refer to the alarming state of the country, and deplored, in forcible terms, the continued occurrence of an enormous amount of undetected crime. Capetown, Bth March. Intelligence has boen received from Natal that, taking advantage of the conditions of the armistice with the Boers, Sir Evelyn Wood has already despatched convoys of provisions to the British garrisons at Pretoria, Wakkerstroom, Standeston, and other places in the Transvaal. VICTOR HUGO CELEBRATION. DISASTROUS STORMS IN AMERICA. THE LATE ROYAL MARRIAGE. [BPECIAL TO MELBOURNE ARGXTS.I London, 28th February. The Dumfriesshire estate of the late Thomas Carlyle has been bequeathed to the Edinburgh Faculty of Arts. At a Btate banquet given at Windsor Castle on the marriago of Prince William of Prussia to the Princess Victoria, both Mr. Gladstone and Earl Beaconsfield were present. A grand celebration has been given at Paris in pommemoration of the eightieth anniversary of Victor Hugo's birthday. All the great writers popular amongst the Parisians were present, and it is estimated that over 300,000 people took part in the rejoicings on the occasion. In the United States and Canada the weather has been unusually severe, and storms and floods have caused enormous destruction of property. Over 500,000 head of cattle have perished. In order to express their sense of the unfairness with which they have been treated by the postal authorities , in not being allowed any subsidy, it is stated that the directors of the Orient Company intend to despatch their steamers on the same date as the outgoing P. and O. steamers. Berlin is en fete in honor of the marriage of Prince Albert William with the Princess Victoria. The bride wore a splendid white damask dress, one of the ancient crowns of the empire, and the treasure diamonds. A series of banquets, balls, and other festivities have been arranged in honor of the occasion.
