Edward Stephenson's boat was capsized off Kirikiri, Russell. A boat put off, but Stephenson is missing. His hat and coat were found in the water. The Board of Governors of the Auckland Grammar School have decided to investigate Dr. Purchase's charges against the master of the school themselves. The enquiry is to be public, and commences on Friday, when l)r. Purchase and the head and classical masters are to be present. The Government have selected 29,000 acres as an equivalent for Patetere advances, and Mr. Cusson, District Surveyor at Hamilton, is to mark off the area on the plan. The natives, instigated by Europeans, demur to several items of the Government account for advances, which is likely to cause complications. New Plymouth, 22nd February. The Hon. Major Atkinson's daughter was married to-day, at 4 o'clock, to Mr. Clement Govett, son of Archdeacon Govett. The, church was crowded with ladies. There were thirteen bridesmaids. Tauranga, 22nd February. The steamers Waitaki and Glenelg went to the Heads this morning to try to pall the steamer Taupo from where she had struck yesterday. After two hours' hard work they had to give it up. The steamer Taupo has been lifted, but is still held by a rock, and the contractors now propose to get a fresh grip and so lift her clear of all rocks by next Tuesday, by which time both steamers will have another try. The tides at present are very low. Cheistchubch. 22nd February. The Admiralty have sent for information regarding the facilities offered in Lyttelton to vessels belonging to the Royal Navy. In opposition to the meeting of yestarday, a counter-petition favoring the opening of the public library on Sunday, will be presented to the Board of Governors. At the fourth series of wool sales, held today, ordinary prices were realised. T. F. Whitmore, secretary to the Working Men's Club, was sentenced to six months' imprisonment to-day. He pleaded guilty to the charge of embezzlement preferred against him. Three hundred and fifty shares in the New Zealand Shipping Company were to-day cold at par— £s. Hitherto they have been quoted at £4 to £4 10s, but it is only lately they have reached even that point. Considering the reserve fond of the company, and the Bteady dividend paid, it has always been a
matter of surprise that shares remained bo low. Dunbdin, This Day. Judge Ward has quashed the conviction of Philip M'Carthy for illicit distillation at Waihemo.
