THE TOTALISATOR.

TO THE BDITOB OS" THE EVENING POST. Sir — In reply to your leading article of the sth inst. about my invention, I beg to state that the totalisator is a legitimate investment, useful in hundreds of ways as a check against fraud and mistakes, and should it even be utilised to record sweepstakes on racecourses it is lawful for that purpose, as explained by the Attorney-General, Mr. Pring (at present Judge of the Queensland Bench), as will be seen by the following extract from the Telegraph, Brisbane, of Tuesday, 25th November, 1879 : — "At the request of the Colonial Secretary, the Attorney-General has given his opinion on the subject as follows : ' Horse-racing is a lawful game, and betting on horse-racing is legal, although the money won is not recoverable at law. a The totalisator is not an instrument of gaming within the meaning of the Act (14 Vie, No. 9), neither is it within the Lotteries Act (16 Vio., No. 2).' " After describing the principle of the totalisator, Mr. Pring continues — " The totalisator merely indicates the number of persons who have staked their money upon each horse, and is not the means of contrivanoe by which the money may be won." By inserting the above in Your valuable paper, you will oblige. I tun, &c, Stbgpbikd Fbanck. Patentee of the totalisator of N.Z. Wellington, 7th February.
