GAS METERS.

TO THB BDITOB OF THB »V«NINa *©ST. Sir— l trust that you will kindly allow me space in your columns to point out what I consider a grave injustice and imposition. I refer to the Wellington Gas Company oharging for "Bent of metor." What would people Bay if their baker, butcher, grocer, coal merchant, and others with whom thoy dealt, appended to their monthly accounts a little memo., "To rent of scales and weights"? Would they quietly suffer suoh a charge to be made, and pay it without a mnrmnr ? I hardly think bo. I should like thoßO who havo been consuming gM for the last few years to turn up their aooounts and find out for themselves what they have been paying. I know that in my own ease I have been consuming gas for 9 years and 4 months, or 112 months, and have been paying eightpenoe per month for rent of meter No. 2 amounting to J63 14a 8d for the whole period. Now, a No. 2 meter will cost in the English market, at wholesale rates, 28s 6d, to which we will add 25 per cent, for freight, insurance, &c, &0., bringing it up to £1 15b 7id. So yon Bee I havo paid enough to buy two BUoh meters, and would have 3s 5d in my pocket. And although I have paid for the meter more than twioe over, tho Gas Company are not contented, but they go on charging eightpenoe a month for rent of moter. This is not like a private grievance, because everyone who is consuming gas is suffering alike with myself, and I think the timo has arrived when the consumers should set their faces against this gross injnstioo.
