SALE OF THE CARGO OF THE PROTOS.

London, 19th January. The steamer Protos, which left Melbourne on the 18th November with a cargo of fresh meat, has arrived here. The meat is reported to be in excellent condition, but there is a doubt as to whether a quantity of butter which is on board haa arrived in a sound state. 20th January. The total reserve in notes and bullion in the Bank of England is .£12,875,000. Five per cent. New Zealand 10-40 Loan, 103 • five per cent. 1889 Loan, 108 ; four and ! a-half per cent. 1879-1904 Loan, 99±. The homeward Australian mails, via Suez and Brindisi, were delivered to-day. In the House of Commons to-day, Sir Charles Dilke, TTnder-Seoretary for Foreign Affairs, announced that the Powers had decided to abandon the proposal to arbitrate for the settlement of the Greek frontier question, but would still Btrive to bring about a complete and peaceful settlement of the difficulty. The debate on the Address in Beply wss resumed in the House of Commons to-day, and other amendments proposed by the Irish members were rejected by overwhelming majorities. The Address was finally carried by an almost unanimous vote of the House. 21st January. News has been received from South America that the Chilians occupied the Peruvian capital, Lima, on Monday last Two sanguinary battles were fought between the two forces, and it ia said that 7000 Peruvians were killed. The Chilian loss is not stated. Owing to the defeat of his troops and the occupation of the capital, Pierola, the President of Peru, has fled. News has been received from South America that the Chilians have followed up their success over the Peruvians at Lima by marching on and occupying Callao. The capture of the town was made almost without opposition. Obituary— Mr. E. A. Sothern, the wellknown actor, aged, 51. The total quantity of wheat afloat for Great Britain is 2,240,000 quarters. Australian tallow has advanced 6dto Is per cwt, and is to-day quoted as follows .— Best beef, 34s 6d ; best mutton, 37s 6d. The Union Bank of Australia has declared a dividend for the past half-year at the rate of 16 per cent, per annum. 22nd January. The raco between Hanlan and Laycook again cannot be rowed to-day as arranged. The Thames is still covered with large masses of floating ice, and traffic on the river is almost entirely suspended. Later. It haa now been arranged that the sculling race between Hanlan and Laycock shall take place on the 14th February. The cargo of fresh meat per Bteamship Protos, from Melbourne, has realised an average price of 6£d per pound all round. Intelligence has been received that the negotiations which have been proceeding between Russia and China, for a settlement of the Kuldja difficulty, have resulted in an agreement being come to for the restoration of the Kuldja Territory to China. The Powers have had under consideration the proposal of the Porte, thai; a conference should be held at Constantinople, to deal with the Tnrco-Greek frontier dispute, and most of them have now agreed to the proposal. J.t is generally understood that all the Powers will agree, and that the conference will be held. H.M.S. Belleisle, an ironolad, carrying four guns, has been ordered to the northwest of Ireland. It is rumored that her object is to intercept a cargo of arms which is expected to be landed on the coast. Owing to the disturbances which are occurring throngh the strike of ooal-miners, considerable bodies of troops have been ordered to Lancashire, but it is considered probable that their ultimate destination will be Ireland, whence troops are being daily despatched. Capetown, 22nd January. Intelligence has been received from the Transkei that the rebellion in that province is rapidly being quelled. The Pondomise' chief, Umdithus, with 800 followers has sur-, rendered to thejCape forces, and other bodies of the rebels are expected to Bhortly submit. News comes to hand from the Transvaal that the Boers recently attacked the town of Bydenberg, where there waß a small British garrison, and the latter has been compelled to surrender.
