The Bruce Herald states that the directors of the Bank of New Zealand have presented the widow of the late Mr. Alfred Jones, late manager of the Bank at Nelson, with a cheque for £1000. Over 400 names have been received of persons willing to become members of the newly-projected Gaelic Society. Private letters state that Professor Blackie will probably visit New Zealand after visiting Canada. Invercahgill, 18th January. The rato of wages intended to be offered harvest hands this season throughout the Southland district is 25s per week and found. Last year they were paid 30s. ohrißTCHurch, 18th January. Michael Haveny and John Conlan, stowaways found on board the Rotomahana, from Wellington, to-day, were committed to prison for seven days each. On Saturday a lunatic, named Downing, escaped from the Asylum, and has not yet been recaptured. This Day. The Maori prisoners, numbering 149, wero removed from Eipa Island to Lybbelton Gaol this morning. They were very noisy during the march through the town. Heavy rain fell last night. The weather was fine this morning, but a heavy thunderstorm has just commenced. Many crops have been cut, and are not yet stacked. New PlybioutHj 18th January. The police succeeded in effecting the capture of a private still this morning near Ingle wood, and about a mile off the road in the bush. Timaru, 18th January. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, judgment was given against the Secretary of the Timaru Regatta Committee for over £40, with costs, money claimed by tho purchasers of privileges, in consequence of the regatta having been postponed. Tho secretary had declined to refund the amount. Ahckland, 18th January. The city valuation shows an increase of 200 properties in the year. A fire has occurred at Hobsonville (Waitemata) Pottery Works. Part of the brickwork of a kiln gave way, and the flames caught the woodwork, bnt the shed was cut in two, and half of it saved. The machinery, partly destroyed, was insured in the North British Company for £1000. The loss is estimated at £400. The Governor will lay the foundation stone of St. Andrew's Episcopalian Church, Cambridge, under the auspices of the Masoaic body at Waikato. Oamartt, This Day. Mr. Bateman'B lectures on " Farmers' Co-operation " have ooncluded with success. A society is to be formed, and a provisional directorate will be appointed on briday.
