Owing to the large quantity of floating ice on the Thames, the race between Laycock and Hanlan could not take place to-day. Mr. Gladstone has recovered from the cold from which he was recently suffering. The Rev. T. P. Dale and the Rev. Mr. Enraght, the Ritualistic clergymen who were imprisoned for contempt of orders of the Court of Arches, have been discharged from custody, it having been found that the writs under which they were arrested were defective. Further news to hand from Central Asia states that the Turcomans recently made an unsuccessful sortie from Geok Tepe, being heavily repulsed by the Russians, who then stormed the outworks. The conflict was most sanguinary, and resulted in heavy loss to both sides. Constantinople, 17th January. The Porte has sent a circular note to its representatives abroad, requesting them to propose to the Powers that the hitter should send delegates to a conference at Stamboul to negotiate for a settlement of the Greek frontier question. The Porte desires that the conference should be held in lieu of the arbitration as proposed by the Powers.
