FATAL FIRE AT BRISBANE.

« The Brisbane Courier of 20th December gives the following particulars concerning the recent fatal fire in Brisbane :—": — " A fire, attended with the most lamentable consequences, broke on the premises of Mr. A. Groom, bookseller and stationer, Stanleystreet, South Brisbane, shorly after 9 o'clook last night. Mr. Groom's shop formed half of a large two-story house, the upper story being occupied by his family, and the ground floor as his business premises. Mr. Groom, who has a family of five children, had gone out with the two eldest early in the evening, leaving the other three — one of whom was quite a baby — at home with Mrs. Groom, and had not returned when the fire broke out. The three children were, it is supposed, in bed, while Mrs. Groom waa sitting reading. The fire seems to have originated on the ground floor, and, being led by the inflammable material in the shop spread . with such rapidity as to break through the upper floor before Mrs. Groom was '. aware of the danger which awaited her. ] Before the children could be got ont of their < beda the stairs were in flameß, and the unfortunate woman, with her three little ones, was virtually imprisoned in the upper story of the burning house. As soon as their , perilous position became known, every effort waa made from without to effect their rescue. Messrs. Livingstone, Chorlton, and others, soon had a ladder up to the back window, by which meana the four occupants were got out, although unfortunately not in time to prevent their being burned to such an extent that the most serious results are anticipated. On examination it was found that Mrs. Groom had been frightfully burned about the head and face ; that the two elder of the children • had been burned more or less from head to foot, and that the younger one was abo badly injured, although we believe not to the same extent as the others." A subsequent telegram states that Mrs. Groom and two of the children have died fratn the injuries reoeived.
