KILBIRNIE HIGHWAY BOARD.
An ordinary meeting of tho above Board was held at the Tramway Hotel, Adelaido Rood, on Saturday afternoon at 3 o'clock, and waa attended by Messrß. Hendrey (Chairman), Mace, Compton, M'Lennan, Agate, and Finch (Clerk). An unusual quantity of routine business having been got through, Mr. Lowry, a ratepayer, raised the question as to whether it would not be possible to remove Hunter's Gate, tho existence of which waa said to be a great inconvenience to those travelling along tho road where it was situated. The Chairman informed Mr. Lowry that the Board had decided to undertake a tour throughout the district at an early date to enquire into alleged nuisances on their own behalf, and Mr. Lowry's grievance would be examinod into among the rest. Copies of resolutions passed on the 13th July and 14th ult., by the Hutt County Council, were forwarded. Tho resolutions were to tho effect that notice be given to all Highway and Local Boards that the Council intended to take over all roads within the county from the 31 at March next ; that the various Boards be cautioned against undertaking contracts in connection with such roads ; that a rate of Is in tho £ be struck for the whole county ; and that .£IOO be granted to the Kilbirnio Board. Mr. Hendrey said he had not received the .£IOO up to tho present, bnt no doubt he would do so in the course of a few days. After some discussion, Mr. M'Lennan moved, and Mr. Compton seconded, that the Council bo asked what roads they meant to take over, and under what clause of what Act. This was carried. Several accounts were passed for payment, and a number of tenders \* ere opened. For maintaining Evans Bay road for a Bpecifio period 6ix tenders were received ; but, in face of tho resolutions referred to above, tho Board decided to postpono the acceptance of tho lowest until a deputation, consisting of Mesera. Hendrey, Compton, and Agate shall have had an opportunity of waiting on tho Hutt County Council in reference to the matter. The deputation afterwards decided to wait on the Council at their next meeting, which takes place to-morrow. For erecting a bridge and forming a small part of Oniro Road, two tenders were reoeived, viz., those of Messrs. Parsons & Co. for £29 10a, and Mr. Robert Lyon for £28 18a. The latter waa accepted. A deputation waa next appointed to wait on the Government in a few days for the purpose of ascertaining the nature of the Auditor's report on the monetary relations between the KaroriMakara and KUbirnie Boards. It was resolved to advertise that persons owing rates struck previous to June last would be legally prosecuted unless the sums due— amonntiug in all to about £74— were duly paid. Other business having been transacted, the Board adjourned for a fortnight.
