THE FATAL FIRE AT BLENHEIM.
SHOCKING DISCLOSURES. [UNITED PEBSS ASSOCIATION. J Blenheim, 3rd January. At the inquest on the body of Mrs. Daikie, found amongst the ruins of the house destroyed by fire on New Year's morning, the prinoipal evidence was given by Mr. Daikie, who stated that he and his wife were intoxicated when they went to bed. When he was awakened by the noise of the fire in the baok room, he got up, took his wife to the front -door, and told her to open the door and run put, as the fire was increasing. / He did not open it himself, as she/had .plenty of time to." do so. He then returned to the bedroom to' throw out what he could- get hold of, and, believing that his wife had escaped, he afterwards got thrdugh the window, and did not know that his wife was missing until the house was so far burnt that nothing could be done to save her. The other evidence given went to show that the Daikies lived on good terms. The jury returned a verdict that there was no evidence to show how the fire originated.
