•» At tho Basin Reserve on Saturday afternoon thero was a fair gathering of spectators on the occasion of the athletic contests providod by the Wellington Amateur Athletic Club. Wo have not Bpaco for more than the bare result of each event. 100 yds Eaco. — Sevon started, viz., Bishop (s ;ratch), M'Cardoll (3£yds), Thompson and Hickson (syds), Bichards and Kirk (Byds), and Dumbell (9yds). Dumbell won by two yards, M'Cardell and Richards coming in second and third respectively. High Jump.— Thero were four competitors, and Kirk (scratch) was tho victor, jumping 4ft lOin ; Hickson, who owed 2 inches, jumped 4ft 1 tin, and wa3 awarded second place; Thompson third. 220 yds Handicap Race. — Bishop started at soratoh, Thompson and Hickson with a handicap of 10yds each, Beswick, 13yda, Kirk, 15yds, and Dumbell, 20yda. Dumboll was nevor reached by the other competitors, and Bishop ran a splendid second. Throwing the Hammer. — Thompson, though owing 12ft, obtained first place, throwing 79ft sin ; M' Cardell (scratch) , threw 61ft 3in; A. King (owing 9ft), threw Gift lOin ; and Lynch (owing sft), throw 55ft. 440 yds Race. — Five competitors, who issued from the contest in the following order — Dumbell (35yda), Richards (28yds), Bishop (scratch), Boswick (22yds), and Thompson (18yds ) Boya' Race.— This proved a rather interesting race. Fourteen boys, under tho age of 15, started for the prize — a silvor chain — which was secured by a big boy named Knigge, who toed the scratch lino. A youngster named Meelcham ran very pluokily, and had tho distance not been so great he must have carried off the trophy. 880 yds Raoo.— Richards, with a handicap of 60yds ca.mo in first, Hickson second. Long Jump. — M'Cardell, 18ft 2in (owing 16in), firat; Hiokson, 16ft sia (owing 4in), second. Putting tho Weight.— Hickson (aoratch), 30ft 7in first. The prizes competed for were three in number, and consisted of a silver cup, a pair of opera glasses, and a silver-plated spirit flask. They wore awarJod to the scorers of the highost nnmbar of points, the first in a contest obtaining 10 points, the second 5, and the third 2. It was found that the first prize belonged to Dumbell, and the second to Hiokson. Thompson and Richards tied for the third prize.
