Some of the French Communists have started a democratic paper called the Patriot. The infant daughter of Mr. Raynes, of the Kaihu Hotel, at Dargaville, ate the heads off a number of lucfier matches. Fortunately, medical attendance was at hand, and the child was saved. Gbahamstown, This Dat. Mr. Wilkinson, proprietor of the Advertiser, and Mr. Brassey, solicitor, were nominated for the Mayoralty. A rush to Te Aroha from Waikato is expected. A Star pigeongram this morning says a large number of farmers visited the prospectors yesterday. All are greatly excited. A gold fever is imminent. Palmerston North, This Day. Mr. James Linton has been re-elected Mayor. There was no opposition. InVERCABGILL, TIIIS DAT. One or two parties are getting gold at Stewart Island. The ground is limited. An inquest was held to-day at North Invorcargill on the body of a child thirteen months old. A verdict of death occasioned by debility, arising from tho state of the lungs and brain in conjunction with bad diet, wa3 returned.
