The opening of the session of tho Wealeyan Church annual district meeting took place this afternoon, the Rev. R. Bavin presiding. The Rev. G. Carr is secretary. At one of the tanneries hero, some excellent leather, manufactured by the chrome process, has been turned out, although in very limited quantity. Tho leather is pronounced by the trade to bo very superior. Its manufacture occupied only about a month, and great saving both as regards 'care and time is claimed. It is confidently expected the chrome deposits of this neighborhood will be shortly worked to advantage. Auckland, 12th November. Captain Farquhar to day entered tho White Bros., of Mercury Bay, for tho champion four-oared outrigger race. At the Board of Education meeting a lettor was read from Mr. Hislop, addressed to tho Board, and informing members that he had received a communication from Sir Julius Vogel, stating that a number of prize books had been forwarded by Sir Julius by the s.s. Durham, to bo disposed of in such way as tho Board might think fit, as Christmas presents. The Board considered the books might bo presented as extra prizes to tho pupils in tho High School, and resolved that Mr. Hislop's letter be acknowledged by the secretary, conveying tho thanks of the Board to Sir Julius Vogel. Kirohi Kipu, a native, ha 3 been arrested on a charge of stealing £30 from the cutter Rangatira. The City Council is preparing an address to Sir Arthur Gordon, and arrangements are being made for the erection of a triumphal arch. H. W. Smith has made proposals to tha City Council to construct street tramwayß, the fare on such lines not to exceed 3d per mile, on being given 21 years' lease of the roads of the city. The proposals were referred to tho Works Committee, to procure further information from the Councils of Southern cities. This Day. Rich gold has been struck in tho prospectors' claim at To Arolia. Specimens of artificial coal manufactured from tho Waikato coal dust have been sent from England to tho Auckland Museum. The Auckland Meat Preserving Company has received an extensive order from tho German war ship Hyane. The United Friendly Societies will march in procession on St. Andrew's Day. An Ancklander, who recently visited Parihaka, recognised nearly 50 of the Lower Waikato natives thero amongst the most devoted followers of To Whiti. Dunkdin, 12th November. Messrs. H. S. Fish and A. H. Last were nominated for the City Mayoralty to-day. Th-ee declarations of insolvency were filed during the week. This Day. The Anglican Synod on the votes lately decided against freo seats Bishop Nevill announced that tho Rev. Wm. Cust, son of the Dean of York, has accepted a license in this diocese. The Synod resolved to request the Government to extend to the Church of England an equal opportunity for tho instruction of it 3 children in tho Industrial Schools with that accorded to the Roman Catholic Church. Invercargill, 12th November. At a meeting of electors of tho Mataura district, held at North Invercargill latst night, a motion to the effect that Mr. Shanks, M.H.R., has not the confidence of his constituents, and that they do not desire any explanation of his past action, but are desirous that ho should resign his seat at once, was carried unanimously. Chris rcauRCH, 12th November. Messrs. H. Matson & Co. to-d»y submitted to auction a number of shorthorns from tho herds of Mr. S. Gardiner, Robertson Bros., Colac (Victoria), Messrs. J. Grigg, J. Deans. W. Boag, and other?. Thera was a very good attendance, and the bidding spirited. The highest prices realised were given for tho Third Duchess of Brunswick, by Mr. J. Deans, 500 guineas ; and for the bull, second, Summerton's Earl of Brunswick, which was sold to the same gentleman for 4CO guineas. The bull Oxford, Duke of Cambridge 2nd was sold to Mr. J. Grigg for 300 guineas. All tbe quarantined cattle of Gardiner's were sold, except one, six animals fetching 1950 guineas. This Day. The total amount realised by Mr. Watson's sale of pedigree cattle yesterday was The settling on the races is now going on with very satisfactory results.
