CHRISTCHURCH. 6th September.
An information was laid against a cabman by the Tramway Company to-day for obstruoting the line opposite the railway station. This arose out of the dispute last week. After a lengthy hearing, the Resident Magistrate decided that the company, having followed neither the deposited plan nor the Order in Council on the portion of the line in question (about two chains where the rails cross the south belt), was not authorised within the meaning of the Act, and consequently there could be no obstruction. Mr. Cowleshaw gave notice to appeal on general grounds. This Day. The Benevolent Association are in an awkward position. The funds are exhausted, and the Association owes over JJSO. A final appeal is to be made to the public, and if it fails the Association will break up. HOKITIKA. 6th September. The body of the missing man Palmer was found this morning on the beach north of Teremakau river. Palmer was the schoolmaster from Canterbury who arrived here by coach on 7th August, and was missed suddenly on the night of 'luesday, 10th August. It is believed that deceased committed suicide. The Supreme Court fittings were opened to-day by Mr. Justice Williams. Dennis Lynch was found guilty of two charges of larceny, sentence deferred ; Robert Walker Cook, found guilty of two charges of forgery, sentence deferred ; John Sweeney, guilty of unlawfully wounding, was sentenced to 12 months' hard labor. Stephen Spencer, cook and sailor on board the Spray, has been accidentally drowned while attempting to proceed from the wharf to the vessel. The inquest was held to-day, and a verdict of accidental death returned. INVERCARGILL. 6th September. The remains of a man named JKichards, who was missing from Lumsden over twelve months ago, have been found at Round Hill. TIMARU. 6th September. At the Resident Magistrate's Court to-day, John Pound, recently arrested in Auckland on a charge of wife desertion, and now doing sentence for that and wilful damage to property, was committed for trial at the Supreme Court for a burglary committed at the Timaru Post Office about two months ago. The Timaru School Committee to-night resolved to request the parents to pay one shilling per head per month towards incidental expenses, provided the total amount paid by any parent does not exceed 2s 6d. If this is not done the committee cannot carry on, owing to the reduction of the grant by the Roard. The school numbers over 1000 pupils. AUCKLAND. 6th September. Li response to an advertisement requiring a man for the country, out of fifteen unemployed who applied for the job this morning only four appeared at all willing to take 15s a week and found. The others declined the pay. Mr. Hill, Collector of Customs has held a preliminary inquiry into the circumstances connected with the los 3 of the barque Kauri, and the result was that he resolved to send the matter to the Kesidcnfc Magistrate for investigation The Couit of Inquiry will ait on Thursdsy next.
