TOWN BELT.

TO THB SDITOB OF THE EVENING POST. Sir— The beauty of the scenery surrounding our splendid harbor is recognised not only by the residents of the city, but is the admiration of all new comers. We ought to take a pride in maintaining its pristine beauty. To a large number of our citizens — those particularly who have arrived of late years — it may not perhaps be generally known that the town belt surrounding the city was settled and left by the New Zealand Company (the founders of the colony) for the use of the inhabitants for public recreation, and that the purchasers of town acres had. . and still have, a right to have the original compact maintained. The town belt never ought to have been dealt with in any way — it was, and is, public property, intended for the health and recreation of the inhabitants. A walk and drive, with suitable plantations, ought to have been made years ago round ¦ the city. Wellington much needs this. If it is not too late this matter should be taken up, otherwise it will be too late, for already further inroads are being made upon the town belt, the Goths and Vandals are at work. The contour of that beautiful object, Mount Victoria, iB being destroyed- by the commencement of on immense excavation. Is there no public spirit to prevent these things? Are the inhabitants of the city so apatnetio that they will allow the handsome legacy left'by the New Zealand Company for the benefit of- the city, land colony to be ; farther mutilated and destroyed.
