CHRISTCHURCH. 17th March.
A woman named Faith Gibson, aims Faith Minifie, was sentenced to a month's imprisonment to-day on a charge of shoplifting ; another charge was dismissed, as there was a little doubt as to the identity of the articles. The husband is a respectable man, and the woman had no excuse to offer. Her lawyer threw up the defence before the case had gone for. Thacker's Hotel, at O'Kain's Bay, Banks Peninsula, was burnt down last night, and nothing was saved. Mr. and' Mrs. Thacker escaped with difficulty from the burning building. The stock and furniture were insured in the South British for ,£I2OO. This Day. Diphtheria has made its appearance at Kaiapoi. A boy, 10 years of age, while playing yesterday, was struck with a stone, thrown by someboys, and rendered unconscious. When taken to the Hospital he was found to be suffering from concussion of the brain. A pedestrian named A. Hudson, has backed himself to walk 50 miles in twelve hours. The match comes off on Monday, at the Amberley Town Hall. The Christchurch Cadet Corps has made arrangements, in conjunction with the Timaru and Oamaru cadets, to hold a review fieldday on Easter Monday. The juvenile companies were left out in the cold in making the arrangements for the encampment.
