A HIGHWAY ROBBER ON A B. CYCLE.
A bicyclist writes to an English contemporary :—": — " While going from Hawick, en route for Carlisle, in company with another bicycle rider, our conversation touched the subject of expenses, which we discussed pretty frejly till we arrived at the long ascent to Moaspant, up which we toiled, when my companion suddenly said, ' I am not going to Ripon at all, and have only accompanied you a3 far as this to get some money. I will trouble you to fork out, in one minute, £10, which will leave you enough to get home with by train.' To meet a highwayman on a bicycle rather Btaggered me, especially as he was a good bit stronger than I wai, but I manapod to reply 'All right,' and formed a plan of aotion. We had just got on the level bit before descending to Canobie, and many of your readers will know that it is a somewhat desolate spot, where assistance is scarce ; so I drew back a little, and then came up with a rush, and turned full into his front wheel, just behind the treadle. At the moment of the collision my foot was on the step, and I thus managed to get off without injury, but my opponent was pretty well chawed up without the necessity of much exertion on my part. However, having tied his hands securely with whipcord, which no bicyclist should ever be without, I smashed his back wheel in .with a' Badly vindictive spirit, and rode off withdut further delay."
