The Wellington correspondent of the Otago Daily Times, telegraphing on Saturday, makes tome remarks on the recent electioa for this' city which will be read with some interest, as .tjtoy .reveal certain phases of the late contest .tb*r have not hitherto been brought under the notice of the public The Times correspondent s 'ys -.—"The scrutiny so far, has not altered the relative positions of the can*dMates for the city election, but has increased the majority of Messrs. Levin and Hutchison. It now turns out that .the ,Rdman Ctthulic block vo'e went as a plumper to Mr HutchUon, and tbat some of Mr Greenfield^ professed warmest supporters were wcretiy wot king for Mr. Hutcbison'6 interests, cud deliberately ' sold Mr. Greenfie d— hence Hutchison's unexpectedly large majority. Much angry feeling bis been created by the discovery. Mr- Hunter's defeat h due entirely to the conduct of the New Zealand Times, of which he is the ruling spirit, in publishing indefensible statements reflecting on Mr. Hutchison's private character, and, their abject retraction and apology on the eve' of the poll under threat of an action. Tbis completely turned the scale in Mr. Hutchison's favor, as. many imagined that all public objections to him wen covered in the retraction, aud contended ttiat te had come out clear, wbile Mr. Hunter- or his paper bad dreuiatea misrepresentations. 'Jhus a strong reaction agakst Mr. Hunter and in favor of Mr. Hutchison set in; and tbis, with the Catholic block vote, won him tbe second place ou the po I. It is rumored to-day that he is to be Minister of Education. The -general opinion here is that tiie G;ey Ministry is sate of a majority, i£,a> small one ;, and the rumor to-day U that, if so, Grey will resign voluntarily soon after tbe "meeting of Parliament, and that a reconstruction'of the 'MinUtry will take place."
