ARCHDEACON STOCK ON THE LOFIUS TROUPE.
♦ At St. Peter's Church last evening tho Veierable Archdeacon Stock preached upon the text (St. Mark, VIII. chap., 15th verse,) "And He charged them, saying take heed, beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the leaven of Herod." In the course of his sermon the preacher compared the authority
of popular opinion of the present day with the tradition of the Pharisees In our Lord's time. Following out this comparison with a practical illustration, the Archdeacon introduced the following strictures on the theatrical company now playing at the Theatre Royal :— " Man's judgmentisheld to t3of such authority that it can be safely followed The plain statement of the word of God is ridiculed as cant and bigotry. Practices which are opposed to common morality are sanctioned or very canfully condemned with mild words of gentle rebuking. Our walls are at this time pictured with full length portraits of immorality, and scarce a word is raised to cry out shame on the offenders; and while on every aide there it a cry of distress, yet night after night those who make a profit to themselves by these things •re applauded to the echo. All Is well. 'Evil be to him who evil thinks,' is sufficient answer to pnt down those who are ready to ask, What Is written on this in the word of God? Oh, brethren, what would Jesus Christ, if walking in our city, hare said to these things 1"
